K-3 Reading Intervention and Support for Readers of All Skill Levels

    Section image

For some, reading comes naturally and easily, but for others it feels confusing or mysterious. For those who struggle learning to read, it can negatively affect their confidence and self esteem. These students need extra support and more explicit instruction.

I provide reading intervention and support for readers of all levels, including students with learning disabilities and dyslexia. Lessons are structured, explicit, sequential and multi-sensory.

I am located in the Ballard neighborhood near Salmon Bay K-8, Loyal Heights Elementary, Adams Elementary, Whittier Elementary and Ballard Boys and Girls Club.

  • Cindy Lang

I am a Special Education Teacher with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's in Elementary and Special Education. I taught students with learning disabilities in New York City for years. When my children were little, I worked as a reading tutor. After moving to Seattle in 2013, I spent a lot of my time helping my children navigate the Seattle Public School system. Now that my kids are high school and college-aged, I have more time to do what I love. Aside from private tutoring, I tutor at Seattle Public Schools (Loyal Heights Elementary) where I enjoy working with kids and helping them reach their true potential.

My background in Psychology informs my teaching and helps me better understand how children learn, what motivates them, and how attention and memory impact learning. I am trained in Orton-Gillingham, a structured, multi-sensory reading approach geared toward students with dyslexia. With my understanding of the science of reading and learning, I am able to provide effective instruction tailored to individual needs and learning styles.

  • My Services

I teach foundational literacy skills and provide explicit instruction in phonics, decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). I use science-based reading programs (Orton-Gillingham, Sound Partners and PAF Reading Program) to provide individualized lessons that are geared toward your student's needs. Lessons are multi-sensory (incorporating the auditory, visual and kinesthetic-motor pathways) to help students strengthen the connections between the sounds of our language and printed letters and words.

    Lessons are centered on:

Phonemic Awareness: how to hear and separate the sounds (phonemes) in words, how to manipulate those sounds: pull words apart (segmenting) and push them together (blending)

Letter-Sound Correspondence: the relationship between letters or letter combinations and their corresponding sounds; key words and visual imagery are used to help students learn and remember letter sounds/symbols; handwriting practice is integrated into each lesson

Advanced study of spelling rules, syllabication, roots and affixes

Sight words: how to learn and memorize high frequency and/or irregular words, often call sight words or memory words; we practice multi-sensory strategies to create strong and lasting mental connections

Fluency and Comprehension: we read select phrases, sentences and passages; decodable books are used to practice the skills they are learning, develop fluency, and most importantly experience reading success (decodable books - simple texts that focus on specific letter patterns that the student has already learned)

    • I administer frequent assessments/checkpoints to monitor student progress and provide consistent, regular feedback
    • I am happy to talk with your child’s teacher to coordinate areas of focus and discuss student progress.

It’s so fun to teach reading because as kids get the support they need and start unlocking the code, you get to witness their confidence and pride grow.

  • K-3 Literacy

In Kindergarten to 3rd grade, students are developing foundational literacy skills, often called

the 5 pillars of literacy. Each pillar plays a crucial role in developing strong reading skills.

The 5 pillars of literacy, as defined by the National Reading Panel, include:

    1. Phonemic Awareness – the awareness that words are composed of sounds and those sounds have distinct articulatory features
    2. Phonics – the ability to recognize letter-sound relationships in words
    3. Fluency – the ability to read with expression, speed and accuracy
    4. Vocabulary – knowledge of words and their meanings, vocabulary size and word-meaning strategies predict comprehension
    5. Comprehension – understanding the meaning of text and integrating it with previous knowledge
